Breaking Ground

When Maria was fourteen she had an interest in mathematics and had thoughts of becoming an engineer. Her parents wanted her to become a teacher, which was the typical occupation for a women, but Maria objected and replied “anything but this!” Maria enrolled at a technical school for boys. After a while her interest changed to biology and then she realized what she wanted to study was medicine. That was completely unheard of. When Maria went to apply the head of the board of education Dr. Bacelli told Maria it would be impossible for her to attend medical school. Maria, being strong willed and secure, did not take this as a rejection but rather as a challenge. Maria won scholarships year after year and worked to pay her own tuition. Maria Montessori was the first female medical doctor in Italy.
